With the advancement of technology, smartphones are now loaded with tonnes of features that we could never imagine before. But, with more features comes poor battery life. None of the tech advancements seem to have improved the battery efficiency of our gadgets so far. The low battery warning on your phone can be a nightmare, but here are some practical tips that can make your smartphone battery last longer.

Improve battery life: 1. Reduce the display brightness


We all love the bright and colorful display of our smartphones but don't forget that it is the #1 enemy of your battery. Display is the component that uses a good share of your smartphone's battery resource. Most of the phones now has an automatic display brightness adjustment feature and it's highly recommended to use it. But to further reduce the battery usage by display, you can just set the brightness to the lowest possible value. This will drastically improve your battery performance, but you will have to adapt to using the phone at such a low brightness. You don't really need the display brightness set to 'high' when indoors. Always try to have the brightness settings low in your phone as it will not only help in a longer battery life, but also save your eyes from strain.

There should be an option called "Screen Timeout' somewhere under your display settings. This setting decides how long your phone's display stays lit when there's no activity from the user. It is better to set the lowest possible timeout for the display to minimize the battery wastage. Android phones typically has the screen timeout set to 15 seconds. If your screen timeout is set to 1 or 2 minutes currently, you will notice a rapid boost to the battery life by reducing it to somewhere below 30 seconds. iPhones have a minimum display timeout limit of 1 minute, so that's the lowest you can go for. A display timeout around 10 seconds is more than enough in most everyday usage scenarios. The battery is simply wasted when your display stays on for longer.

We all love using Bluetooth with the wireless speaker, hands-free headset or the activity tracker, But it's better not to forget that Bluetooth is basically a battery hog. To keep working, it needs to send and receive signals from the surrounding which will demand a good share of the battery power. The best policy when it comes to Bluetooth is to keep it turned off unless you want to play music wirelessly or share files with your friends. By doing this, you will add an hour or two to your precious battery life.

Just like bluetooth, Wi-Fi is a serious battery hog as well but it is something unavoidable nowadays. While using Wi-Fi is better than using 3G or 4G data on your device, just turn it off when you go outdoors and not using it. If you are using android, you can add the Wi-Fi toggle widget to your home screen to easily toggle it on and off. You can do the same from the pull down quick settings area. For iPhone users, it's easier to toggle the Wi-Fi from the pull up control centre.

Apps that use location services like GPS are a big concern to the battery performance. You can either completely turn off the location services or grant only a few important apps the capability to use them. Many apps that use the location services don't necessarily need them and works fine without it. It's better to turn on the location services only when you need to use important things like maps.

With the superior multi-tasking capabilities of smartphones, it is likely that we forget to close an app after using it. Multi-tasking is a great feature that makes our smartphones really smart. It's obvious that it uses the processor and battery a lot to give us the smooth multitasking functionality.  Some apps are more resource hungry than the others. Facebook is an example of a resource hungry app and they are already working on a fix. These apps keep running in the background consuming RAM, processor power and our precious battery. By closing down the unused apps that are running in the background, you can reduce the load on the processor and battery. This will certainly improve the battery life and also make your phone perform faster at the same time.

To close backgound apps on android, tap the multi-tasking button which is usually the right most one in most devices and swipe them to the sides. On an iPhone, double tap on the home icon and push upwards to kill the apps. Always close the apps after using them or employ an efficient task manager for taking care of it.

Some of us prefer our phones to let us know about an incoming call through the vibration rather than the ringtone. Although it has its exclusive benefits, it surely uses more battery power compared to the ringtone does even at full volume.This is because the vibration is actually facilitated by a small motor inside the phone, and a motor definitely needs more power than the loudspeaker. When you don't want to be disturbed with a ringtone, consider keeping the phone in view with all kind of alert mechanisms like ringtone and vibration turned off. This way, you can see when there's an incoming call without the phone having to vibrate or produce irritating loud ringtone. This approach might not be for everyone, but if you are fine with this, you should definitely go for it.

You should never turn off the notifications for important things like new text messages or missed call alerts. But it makes sense to turn off the other unnecessary notifications when it can improve your battery performance and eliminate the pointless distractions at the same time.

Your smartphone is configured to check for emails every now and then by default. This 'checking for new emails' activity of your phone consumes some battery power. Instead of the very frequent check for new emails, consider changing the setting so that the phone checks for new emails every 15 or 30 minutes depending on how quickly you need to respond to the emails. This can help save some battery juice and keep your phone running for longer.

These include preventing the apps from downloading an update, disabling animations, dimming the display, lowering the screen timeout and turning the vibration off. You can also set the battery level at which the phone automatically goes into the power saver mode.
